Wythenshawe Town are delighted to announce the signing of Grant Spencer as a player-coach.

The 28-year-old played for Town throughout the 2018/19 campaign, before joining Abbey Hey at the end of 2019 for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

But it has now come to a stage where that experience can be used best in another role, as Town manager James Kinsey, praised Spencer for being a great influence on the squad.

“He’s someone myself and Dan Whiteside [assistant manager] get along with and feel like he brings a lot to the table,” he said.

“He’s great in a dressing room and knows his football inside out. He has a top football brain, is a real character, and will bring a great insight to things from a management point of view.

“He will be great for team spirit as the lads all love him. Whilst we would like it to be plain sailing this season, the reality is it won’t be.

“There’s tough times through a season and you need people like Grant on board to carry you through when it does get a bit tough.”

But this new role for Spencer also entails him playing when needed upon, and Kinsey believes he still has the qualities to dominate a game from central midfield.

“Grant has been about and been very good wherever he has been,” he added. “There’s no doubting, technically, he is still unplayable at times.

“He keeps the ball very well and can create a lot. There’s no doubt that he still has a lot to offer as a player, but we’ve brought him in on the management side.

“We’ve also got Nick Pearce who’s a class coach and Grant will bring another dimension to it – the player in him is an added bonus.”
