Wythenshawe Town put 4 past a youthful Oldham Athletic side as the sides met at Ericstan Park, in the penultimate pre-season match for Town.
No sooner had the referee’s whistle blown, than Town were in front; 4 minutes to be precise.
Steven Yarwood found himself in a pocket of space on the edge of the Latics’ penalty area, before spotting the darting run of Matty Bryan and slipping the ball through for the forward to fire home emphatically.
Efforts by Jack Timmons and Justin Pickering stung the palms of the Latics’ goalkeeper. Town’s inevitable second goal was already on its way and it arrived on the half hour mark, by way of an own goal.
Silky winger, Jordan Burton, made a bursting run down the right flank, showing good strength to hold off the Latics’ left-back, before fizzing a low cross into the six-yard box. A nightmare for the centre-half who inadvertently turned it into his own net.
Two soon turned to three, when Steven Yarwood – the assist king – delivered an inviting corner kick at the near post for Lee Gregory to glace the ball past the goalkeeper, sending Town into the break, 3-goals up.
Town almost began the second half as they did the first, when Pickering sent a Paolo Di Canio-esque volley inches over the bar. Pickering who said in the preview that he is looking to add more goals to his game, almost added a third to his pre-season tally in spectacular fashion.
However, the deficit was reduced to two by the visitors, following some neat combination play.
But any hopes of a comeback were extinguished by an inspired substitution by Town manager, James Kinsey. A trialist coming on in the place of Yarwood – who put in a solid performance for 60 minutes as he progresses towards full fitness – leathered in a low rebounded shot after Matty Roberts’ initial drive had hit the base of the post. Restoring Town’s 3-goal lead in the process.
Plenty of positives for Kinsey to take from yesterday’s game, but tougher tasks lay ahead for the blues.
Pre-season preparations conclude this Saturday as Wythenshawe Town welcome Chadderton FC to Ericstan Park.
