Myers opens the scoring
Pickering bags on return
Bryan seals the deal
Justin Pickering, Steven Yarwood and Matty Bryan all scored and assisted as Town completed a second half rout against Barnton FC to move within touching distance of the promotion places.
Town opened the scoring mid-way through the first half when birthday boy, Liam Myers planted home a near-post header following Jack Timmons’ corner delivery.
An own goal from Alex Jones aided Town in doubling their advantage just past the hour mark before a flurry of three quick-fire goals in the closing minutes from Pickering, Bryan and Yarwood sealed an empahtic 5-0 thrashing under the floodlights.
Town get their revenge in style
It’s scarcely fathomable that just six months ago, this team were staring down the barrel of defeat for the second time in their first three games, having only picked up one point in the process.
Barnton dealt a sucker punch that day with a late winner to seal Town’s fate on a poor day for the club.
But now Town are flying, having lost just three times in the league since then and being in prime position to secure a promotion place - and with the form they’re in, who can really doubt them?
Despite a fairly sluggish opening 25 minutes from both sides, Town broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when Myers was sharpest to react at the near post to finish yet another Timmons’ assist this season.
No such lethargy in the second period as Town grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and took the fight to their opponents. A plethora of chances came and went but Town weren’t to be deterred.
Yarwood struck the bar from the edge of the area with a rasping left-footed effort and moments later, Town muscled their way forwards again.
Substitute Bryan twisting and turning down the left flank, delivering an awkward ball in which Jones could only divert into his own net.
Victory was all but sealed with five minutes to spare when Yarwood’s flicked pass found its way to the feet of Pickering who managed to squeeze his effort inside the front post from the acutest of angles.
Pickering was involved once again when his intelligent shoulder drop sent his midfield counterpart back to Cheshire before finding Bryan who rounded both the defender and keeper to slot nonchalantly into an empty net.
A contender for goal of season rounded off a stunning night’s work when Matty Roberts sprayed a sumptuous 50-yard ball into the path of Bryan who provided an inch perfect pass into the feet of Yarwood who obliged with an unstoppable first time finish into the bottom corner.
This result will boost confidence exponentially as we go into our quarter-final clash of the Playermatch.com cup with Abbey Hey this Saturday.
