Town 2-2 North Ferriby
Wythenshawe Town have been eliminated from the FA Vase after losing to North Ferriby on penalties in the first round.
To use the cliché, it was ‘a game of two halves’ as Town went into the break two up before the away side got as many back after the break.
Darius Palma opened the scoring after great play from Matthew Bryan who got in behind the defence following a pass from Brad Byrne.
In which the striker then instantly crossed the ball for Palma to calmly side-foot his volley into the bottom corner.
But then it was a quick-fire double for the home side who got a penalty 2 minutes later for a Levi Tarbotton handball.
And Byrne made no mistake from the spot, who put his penalty into the top corner on the keeper’s left.
It was the perfect start from Town who were clinical and in control against a tough North Ferriby side.
Although, in the first half, it wasn’t just in attack that the home side were terrific as Callum Jakovlevs made a great save to keep the away side at bay.
On the 36th minute, Ben Leyland attempted a left-footed curling shot from 20 yards and it looked as though it was going into the top corner.
But Jakovlevs used his height brilliantly to push the effort over the crossbar to keep up Town’s great first half.
However things were much more different in the second half to the credit of North Ferriby who made a brilliant comeback.
On the hour mark they halved the deficit as Danny Buttle’s cross met the leaping head of Leigh Hutchinson at the back post who converted his chance.
And then 15 minutes later they got their equaliser with the help of Joshua Dennett’s ‘Rory Delap-esc’ throw-in.
It met Tom Corner inside the six-yard box whose header then stroked the crossbar before going into the back of the net.
And from here-on, both sides remained very even trying to find that winner but ultimately, the tie went straight to penalties.
North Ferriby took the first penalty with Gary Bradshaw converting as Town’s reply was saved by Jordan Douglas.
But both sides then scored each penalty until North Ferriby had the chance to win the shoot-out with 5 scored out of 5.
However Jakovlevs saved Bradshaw’s penalty as Chris Baguley converted his to put the shoot-out into sudden death.
Laurence McKay scored his penalty, but Grant Spencer then had his saved to give the visitors the victory.
It was a gutting result for Town but it’s important to look at the bigger picture and what the priority is – the league.
Wythenshawe have won every league fixture so far this season and sit 2 points inside the promotion places having played a game less – we move on!
