Grant Spencer lines up a free kick v Cammell Laird

Wythenshawe Town returned to winning ways as they beat Cammell Laird on Bank Holiday Monday.

Despite being victorious the visitors were on the back foot for the opening exchanges of the game and could have fallen behind as early as five minutes after goalkeeper Bruno Da Silva gave away a penalty kick after upended Colm Lynch. Striker Stephen Rothwell stepped up but blazed his spot-kick high over the upright to let Town off!

Despite being let off with the penalty, Town fell behind on 11 minutes after Cammell Laird broke out and winger Joshua Donnelly squared the ball into the path of Rothwell and the striker this time found the back of the net, firing beyond Da Silva from just inside the penalty area.

After falling behind Town were the better side and created a couple of half chances. First Spencer delivered a terrific free-kick and Tom Meachin met but his header went wide of the upright and then a few minutes later a great move down the right saw Connor Brotherton cross to the far post to Ben Steer but his effort was blocked and despite claims of handball the referee said no penalty!

Just moments later though Town won a free kick 25 yards from goal, and Grant Spencer's superb effort forced Nathan Wolland to tip onto his post before Brad Byrne followed in and hit home the rebound to draw Town level.

Cammell Laird had a terrific opportunity to retake the lead just one minute after conceding and it was Rothwell in the thick of the action again after he found himself in the clear but his goal-bound effort was well saved by Bruno Da Silva. The hosts were made to pay for there missed opportunity as Town winger Ben Steer picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and struck a terrific effort right into the corner of Wolland's goal to put Town ahead just before the half-hour mark.

On the stroke of halftime, Steer had an opportunity to add to his tally after fullback Niall Rhodes beat his marker and pulled the ball back to the Town winger but his effort was kept out by Wolland.

The start of the second half was an even affair with neither side putting either goalkeeper under any pressure until the 53rd minute when a breakout from Town saw Jake Parker square the ball to Brad Byrne but his effort went just wide of the upright.

Parker was in the action again just after the hour mark as he was upended wide right and Grant Spencer delivered a free kick which wasn’t dealt with by the Cammell Laird defence and the ball fell to Tom Meachin who slammed home to score his first goal for Town.

Despite falling two goals behind Cammell Laird tried to find a way back into the match and on 64 minutes they had a glorious opportunity to do so. After a good move down the left substitute, Nightingale played the ball into the path of Donnelly and even though his effort had Da Silva beat man of the match Connor Brotherton got back and managed to clear the ball off the line to deny ‘The Camels’ winger.

Town continued to look to extend their lead and on 83 minutes Niall Rhodes delivered a ball into the path of Gavin Salmon but Nathan Wolland denied the Town substitute.
