Town face Stockport Georgians in their first pre season game of the season!

This Saturday Wythenshawe Town take on Stockport Georgians in their first pre season game of the campaign. After Town’s extremely impressive season last time round, the squad will be looking to have a strong pre season before the North West Counties Premier Division 2022/23 season begins.

With the new campaign quickly approaching, Town are eager to get back out onto the field and show their passionate fans what they have been missing for the past two and a half months. We caught up with the 2021/22 NWCFL Manager of the season, James Kinsey, who explained just how much his side have been looking forward to this occasion.

“It feels like such a long time since we played. We had a couple of weeks off but we’ve been working hard recently to ensure we are improved both on and off the pitch. Ultimately we are here to play football though so we are just itching to return to the pitch on Saturday against Stockport Georgians.”

Kinsey led his side to third place in the North West Counties Premier Division in the clubs first season at this level, and to the FA Vase quarter finals. This helped to grow interest in the club, making live television and radio news platforms. His players fought week in week out and gave everything to get the results that they wanted and needed. Kinsey explained that even though there has been departures from the squad, they have maintained their high standards and have improved over the summer break.

“We had to make sure we bought the average age of the group down this summer. We have done that. The signings we’ve made are of a good age and that was key. I feel like we have improved the squad and the lads are looking very sharp in training. They’ve maintained their levels over the break which we are delighted with.”

Kinsey also reminds us of last seasons tight knit group and how important it was to keep hold of key players who were vital to the achievements of the club last season, and who will be important to any potential success for the club this coming season and beyond.

“We had such a good group last season and the wheel didn’t need reinventing. We had to retain key players and we’ve done that with respect to the lads that have moved on. Of course some great players have moved on. We’re excited to see how Jan Palinkas holds out at a higher level. But the remaining lads we have kept was our key players last season. This is arguably more pleasing than making a new signing as there was a lot of interest with how we done last season.”

Even though pre season is looming, Town’s first official game of the 2022/23 season will be played away at Irlam FC on the 30th July. Until then, these six pre season games are vital to hopefully gather some momentum and according to Kinsey, set the standards for the season ahead. These standards are bound to be high after Town’s incredible run of form from the last 4 months of last season, (11th December to 12th April) where Town lost just once in the league.

“One thing I have learnt in pre season with experience is that results mean absolutely nothing. It’s just about setting standards and getting the group to a level that is ready on day one. I know the fan base we built last season are itching for it all to start again and we hope they’re ready to build their momentum too.”

As the gaffer mentioned, the fans were an integral part to the remarkable FA Vase Cup run and the league success, travelling all over the country to support their club. Looking ahead, Kinsey gives us an overview of his aims and objectives for Town for the upcoming season. Hopefully his vision and hopes for the future of the club are evident each game at a time.

“We have one objective this season. Win the next match. For the last few seasons we have always started slowly. But at Christmas in these campaigns we have picked up massively. Last season we lost one league game after Christmas. Our form at the turn of the year is always first class. If we can get a good start then we will have great confidence going into the second half of the season with this in mind. So as I say, win the next match. We’re really looking no further than that.”

Whatever happens this pre season, it’s sure to be another exciting ride in this seasons league campaign.
