Wythenshawe crashed out of the JB Parker Premier Division Challenge Cup at the first hurdle, as they lost 0-2 at Ericstan Park to Crewe FC.
The hosts started the game the better side and put Crewe goal keeper Arran Lyons under early pressure with efforts from Ashley Leather and a free kick from captain Joe Yarwood forcing the Crewe shot stopper into a couple of early saves.
Despite the early pressure from Wythenshawe it was the visitors who took the lead on 10 minutes, when striker Derice Richards picked the ball up inside the Wythenshawe penalty area after a terrific ball from the right and fired beyond Ben Daniels who was making his return to the Wythenshawe line-up.
Just four minutes later and Richards could have doubled his and Crewe’s tally for the afternoon after he again picked the ball up in the penalty area but this time his close range effort went over the crossbar.
Despite going a goal down Wythenshawe responded well, and Rico Stewart had a couple of chances to draw them level. The first after good play down the right the ball was played to winger Dan King who’s cross into the penalty area was met by Stewart but he couldn’t guide his header on target and it went over the top of Arran Lyons goal. The second came just a couple of minutes when a free kick from Umar Wahid was headed down in the penalty area from captain Joe Yarwood and it found Stewart but his effort on the turn went just wide of the upright.
Just after the half hour mark Crewe doubled their advantage, when again a ball from the right found Derice Richards this time unmarked on the edge of the penalty area and he guided the ball into the far corner leaving Ben Daniels no chance.
Halftime: Wythenshawe Town 0-2 Crewe FC
After the restart Wythenshawe started on the front foot and winger Dan King had the half’s opening opportunity when he got the better of his marker and cut inside onto his left foot but his effort from range went wide of the upright.
It wasn’t until the final 20 minutes when the games next best chance was and it fell to the visitors. When a ball was played into the area the Wythenshawe defence failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to substitute Brandon Kelly but his effort from just outside the penalty area was saved by Ben Daniels.
Three minutes later and Wythenshawe captain Joe Yarwood had an opportunity to half the deficit, when he picked the ball up and beat two men on the edge of the penalty area but his effort was again straight down the throat of goalkeeper Arran Lyons.
With five minutes remaining substitute Rory Robinson had a chance to give the hosts a glimmer of hope of getting back into the match when he was found by Rico Stewart on the edge of the Crewe penalty area, but Arran Lyons made a comfortable save.
