Town lose cup semi-final
Town were eliminated from the Playermatch.com cup after losing to Sandbach United 1-0 in the semi-final second leg.
This made it 3-1 on aggregate in a tie where both legs were played 176 days apart.
But today, Town struggled to get into top gear while Sandbach were happy to defend their lead on aggregate. And they did that brilliantly, minimising any chance of a goal-scoring opportunity for Town during a large part of the first half.
Yet on the half hour mark, Sandbach decided to go on the attack to score the opener in what was the first clear-cut chance of the match.
It was a great build-up of play passing from the back before a cross was whipped in for Josh Lane to score a diving header within 6 yards.
And from here on Sandbach were in full control of the tie, even though Town then endured more chances to score after the interval.
Just a minute into the second half, Liam Myers had an opportunity as his left footed curling shot went narrowly over from 18 yards.
And then shortly after, he had a powerful shot go agonisingly wide before his goal was ruled out for offside on the 70th minute mark.
In the second half, Town were the better team but Sandbach were always comfortable and they excelled in their game plan.
And while Sandbach will turn their attentions to the final, Town now look to their first league game in what promises to be a special campaign for Wythenshawe, who have bigger things ahead.
