Preparations ahead of the new season are well and truly underway at Wythenshawe Town.
Following our promotion from the North-West Counties South Division last season to the Premier Division, manager James Kinsey is looking forward to the challenge, saying: “We know it’s going to be tough to step up. There will be a good few teams with bigger budgets and teams who have experience in that league.
“We’re going to have to work hard every week, we know that, but we’ve got a group here that are very capable. We will take it one game at a time and let’s see what happens. We’re looking forward to it though, it’s been a long time coming”.
Town’s pre-season campaign got underway last Saturday (26th June) in a nine-goal thriller against AFC Darwen. Coming out on the wrong end of a 5-4 result, Kinsey said: “We had a lot of new lads/trialists in for the game against Darwen and it showed.
“We’re really frustrated at the minute because we’ve got so many injuries. We knew the game was going to be tough because of this and it showed. We learnt a lot and it gives us time to put things in place”.
On the new signings and any further additions this summer, the Town boss said: “We’ve signed a couple already and we have a few in training with us at the minute, it’s so important to get the right lads in.
“We’ve got no clicks here and people will get found out quickly in the dressing room we’ve got now. The personality of a player is arguably more important than the talent when we look at who we want to bring in. We want to bring in another two or three before the season starts”.
Looking ahead to our inaugural season in the Premier Division, Kinsey gave us his thoughts on his expectations: “This season is all about consolidating. We are going to play each game as it comes and learn as we go. If we can keep getting the numbers through the gate that we’ve got previously, that alone will be a huge factor in how we do”.
Town are next in action on Saturday 3rd July (3pm kick-off) as we travel to Mereheath Lane, where we face Egerton FC.
